Ear Ringing Spiritual Meaning: Both Ears, Tinnitus and Bible

Published on:

The ear ringing spiritual meaning most people give a sudden ring in both ears is “stop and pay attention,” with “a spirit is near” and “someone is talking about you” close behind. Only the talking one is truly old, because Pliny the Elder, writing in ancient Rome, recorded it as a belief everyone shared. For the friendly “a spirit is near” reading, no old source turned up anywhere we looked.

Your ears come first, though. The ringing has a medical name, tinnitus, and according to the NHS it usually points to nothing serious and may settle by itself. But if your ears ring after a knock to the head, or the ringing comes together with sudden hearing loss, a weak face or the room spinning, the NHS treats it as an emergency, and that is a body sign that needs a doctor before it needs a meaning.

Your ears are just one part of the body that people read for messages. Our guide to how people read body signs spiritually covers the others, and for feathers, numbers and other everyday moments, try our main guide to signs from the universe.

What Does Ear Ringing Mean Spiritually?

What does ear ringing mean spiritually: a young man pausing at his desk, hand lightly at his ear, looking up thoughtfully

Picture it. You are doing homework in your room, and both of your ears suddenly fill with a thin, high note. A few seconds later, your room sounds normal again.

People read that moment in five main ways. None of them can be proven, so treat this as a menu, not a verdict.

  • Pay attention. The most common reading says your ears are calling you back to whatever you are doing or thinking right now.
  • Someone is talking or thinking about you. This is the oldest belief of the lot, and you can see where it comes from below.
  • A change is coming. It could be your sign of a spiritual awakening or a new chapter, if that feels true.
  • A guide, an angel or a loved one is with you. This is the most comforting reading, and also the newest.
  • Slow down. It may be your cue to rest, drink some water and put your phone away.

The meaning that fits is usually the one your own mood picks first. A ring during a worry tends to feel like a nudge, and a ring in a happy moment tends to feel like a hello. If the rings keep coming, a week of short notes in your phone will show you more than any chart online.

Ringing in Both Ears at Once

Ringing in both ears spiritual meaning: a young woman pausing on a park path, eyes closed, taking a calm breath

Most pages split ear ringing into left and right, and skip the moment when both of your ears ring together.

Many people read a ring in both ears at once as the strongest form of “pay attention.” It is not tied to one side, so it can feel like a nudge about your whole life rather than about one person.

So when it happens, stop for a moment. Take one slow breath, look around you and catch the thought you had a second ago.

Your body has a plain reason too. The NIDCD, the US government institute for hearing, says tinnitus can be in one ear, both ears or your head, and that surveys estimate 10 to 25% of adults have it. It says many people get it after loud noise at a concert or a sporting event, and it names everyday painkillers like ibuprofen and aspirin among the medicines linked to it.

If your ringing began with a new medicine, tell your doctor or pharmacist. Mayo Clinic says medicines that cause tinnitus usually cause it in both ears. And please do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Left and Right Ear Ringing

You may be looking up left and right ear ringing together, because your ring seems to jump sides or you cannot tell where it is. Here is the short version, and each side has its own full page.

The left ear gets mixed readings. Some folk sayings blame unkind gossip, others call it a message from the spirit side, and some energy teachers call the left your receiving, feminine side. Our left ear ringing page walks you through each one.

The right ear usually gets the kinder readings, such as praise, good news coming or, for some, a sign of love. Our page on right ear ringing traces where that kinder side came from.

If your ring swaps sides, treat it like a ring in both ears. And if one ear keeps ringing on its own for weeks, start with the doctor section below.

Where the Ear Ringing Spiritual Meaning Comes From

Ear ringing folklore: misty hills in south-west Scotland with a small stone church and its bell at dusk

Online, most ear ringing meanings come with no source. These are the pieces we could actually trace, and a few we could not.

○ Do Your Ears Ring When Someone Is Talking About You?

This is the oldest belief about ringing ears that we found. Pliny the Elder’s Natural History is a huge Roman encyclopedia, and in book 28, chapter 5, he notes the customs of ordinary people. Among them, he calls it “universally received” that people far away get a warning, through a tingling in the ears, when others talk about them.

You might miss two small details. Pliny reports it as a popular belief, not as something he tested, and he never says which ear. So every left and right rule you see online came along much later.

Today the belief has stretched from talking to thinking, and you may hear it said that a ring means someone misses you. Hot or burning ears are a cousin of the same idea.

○ Do Your Ears Ring When a Spirit Is Near?

Many people believe so, and the idea can bring you real comfort, especially after a loss. Hindustan Times, an Indian newspaper, quoted a spiritual teacher on Instagram who said a ringing ear could mean “a spirit guide or light being is nearby.” Blogs and videos repeat it, but none we read names an older teaching behind it.

The oldest relative we found is a sad one. J. Maxwell Wood’s 1911 book on the folklore of south-west Scotland records the “dead-bell,” “a tingling in the ears, believed to announce a friend’s death.” Wood also describes a real dead bell, a hand bell the parish sexton rang around the district to announce each death.

Please do not let that frighten you. It was one local omen among many in a book of old superstitions, and nobody has shown that ringing ears can tell you the future.

If a ring after a loss feels like your person saying hello, you are free to keep that. Other small signs comfort people too, like a white feather on your path.

And if your ears stay quiet, that is completely alright. Missing someone is its own kind of closeness.

○ The Ear Ringing Charts You See Online

You may have seen a chart with a meaning for every ear and every pitch. The best-known copy, shared on Reddit’s spirituality forum with about 580 upvotes, ends up calling one kind of low ring “evil,” and its poster admitted it was found on Google. The replies on Reddit show what that does, with frightened readers asking how to deal with demons in their ears.

We will not repeat the rest, because it has no source and it scares people. No tradition we found calls a low hum evil, and our low hum section gives you the plain causes doctors list.

The same goes for other claims you may meet. Matching your ring to a “spiritual frequency,” Chinese hour-by-hour meanings, and the left side as feminine with the right as masculine all trace to no real text that we could find, so treat them as modern ideas, not tradition.

What Does the Bible Say About Ringing Ears?

Bible and ringing ears: a young man sitting in stillness on a mountainside at dawn, listening quietly

The Bible never mentions ringing ears. A Bible Gateway search of the NIV for the word “ringing” finds no verses at all.

What you will find are tingling ears, and they mean something quite different from what many blogs tell you.

○ The Three Verses Where Ears Tingle

In the King James Version, “tingle” appears in just three verses, and the same Bible Gateway search tool lists them. They are 1 Samuel, chapter 3, verse 11, 2 Kings, chapter 21, verse 12, and Jeremiah, chapter 19, verse 3, and in all three God is announcing a disaster.

Look at one small word in the first verse. God says “both the ears” of everyone who hears it will tingle, and 2 Kings, chapter 21, verse 12 says “both his ears.” So if both of your ears are ringing, these are the closest verses the Bible has.

The Hebrew word behind “tingle” is tsalal. Strong’s concordance defines it as to tinkle or rattle together, “as the ears in reddening with shame, or the teeth in chattering with fear.” The Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew lexicon adds that in all three verses the ears tingle at “dreadful news.”

So in the Bible, tingling ears are the shock you feel at terrible news, like the prickle on your skin when you hear something awful. It is not a private sign sent to you, so if your ears ring in church, these verses do not say God is warning you.

○ The Still Small Voice

When Christians talk about hearing God, many turn to 1 Kings, chapter 19. God is not in the wind, the earthquake or the fire, and after the fire, verse 12 says, comes “a still small voice.”

Many believers take this as the way to listen for God, in stillness. But the verse says nothing about ears ringing. So if a quiet ring comes while you pray, let it remind you to be still, rather than taking it as the voice itself.

○ Verses That Are Not About Ringing Ears

Some websites will tell you that Exodus, chapter 3, verse 4, Exodus, chapter 19, verse 16, 1 Samuel, chapter 3, verses 1 to 10, Acts, chapter 9, and Revelation, chapter 1, verses 10 and 11 are ear ringing verses. Bible Answers Project, a pastor’s blog, traced that list back to a 2023 blog post and went through it verse by verse.

The verdict from Bible Answers Project is short. “None of these say anything about tinnitus,” it says, and in each passage people hear a voice or a trumpet from outside, not a ring inside their ears.

High-Pitched Ringing in Your Ears

High-pitched ringing in ears at night: a young woman lying awake calmly in a moonlit bedroom with a small fan nearby

A thin, high, almost electric note is the sound you are most likely to hear. Spiritual pages tend to give high notes the bright readings, like clarity or an awakening. Those pitch rules come from the same untraced charts, so hold them lightly.

On the body side, the NIDCD says tinnitus may be soft or loud, low or high, and may ring, buzz, roar, whistle, hum, click, hiss or squeal. Your ear does not need a message to make any of those sounds.

Our view is simple. A high note that comes once and leaves is a fine excuse to pause and smile, while one that returns louder each week is a job for the doctor section, not a chart.

○ Ringing at Night or in a Silent Room

You might only hear the ring in bed, in an exam hall or in a very quiet room, and wonder why it picks that moment. One old experiment explains a lot.

In 1953, two researchers named Heller and Bergman had 80 people with normal hearing sit in a soundproof room. A 2005 review in the Brazilian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology reports that 94% of them heard tinnitus there, in the quiet.

So if you hear a ring in your silent bedroom, you are in the same place as almost everyone in that test. It does not prove a visit, and on its own it does not prove a problem.

If the night ring keeps you awake, put on a fan, soft music or rain sounds. The NIDCD lists bedside sound generators, phone apps and even a household fan as ways people with mild tinnitus get to sleep.

○ Low, Buzzing or Humming Sounds

A low hum, a buzz like bees or a whoosh can feel more unsettling to you than a clear ring. Some spiritual coaches call a hum the sound of your higher self close by, and you are free to like that reading.

But you should know the everyday causes too. Mayo Clinic says pulsatile tinnitus, the kind that pulses like a heartbeat, is usually caused by conditions of the blood vessels, and high blood pressure is one of them. A sound that keeps time with your pulse belongs in the doctor section, not on a chart.

If the sound changes when you chew or clench your teeth, tell your doctor or dentist. The NIDCD lists jaw joint problems, jaw clenching and tooth grinding among the things that can cause or worsen tinnitus.

Ringing in Your Ears During Meditation or Prayer

Ringing in ears during meditation: a young man meditating calmly on a cushion in a bright, simple room

You may first notice a ring the day you start meditating, and you might take it as proof the practice is working. There is a real tradition of listening to inner sound, though it is not quite what the charts say.

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, a classic text of hatha yoga, teaches a practice of listening to nada, the inner sound. In chapter 4, verse 66 of Pancham Sinh’s translation, the yogi sits and hears “the sound inside his right ear, with collected mind.” Verses 84 and 85 say the sounds start like kettle drums, move on to conch shells and bells, and end like a flute, a vina (a stringed instrument) and a bee.

The Radha Soami Satsang Beas teaching has its own inner sound, the Shabd. In a piece on its website, Maharaj Sawan Singh calls it “the celestial melody.”

Neither text says a ringing ear is a message for you. Both describe a sound you go looking for on purpose, inside a practice.

So how should you handle a ring in meditation? If it feels pleasant, you can simply rest your attention on it. If it bothers you, do the opposite.

The NHS advises people with tinnitus to avoid complete silence and not to focus on the sound, because focusing can make it worse. Play soft music or a fan while you sit, or choose a meditation that follows your breath or a spoken guide.

Is Ear Ringing Clairaudience?

Clairaudience is the belief that some people can hear spirits or messages that you and others cannot. Etymonline, a website that traces where English words come from, dates the word to 1858 and defines it as a “supposed power of hearing, in a trance, sounds inaudible to those in a waking state.”

Some spiritual teachers will tell you that ringing ears are an early sign of clairaudience, as the teacher quoted in Hindustan Times did. But in research on mediums who say they have it, the experience is about voices, not a plain tone.

A 2020 study in the journal Mental Health, Religion and Culture asked 65 Spiritualist mediums about the spirit voices they hear. Most said the voices were mainly inside their heads (65.1%), and 44.6% heard them every day. The mediums also scored high on absorption, a tendency to get deeply caught up in your inner world, and the study did not set out to test whether spirits are real.

A plain tone is one thing, but words are another. If you begin to hear voices that the people beside you cannot, and above all if they scare you, tell a parent or another adult you trust and book a doctor’s visit, which says nothing against your beliefs.

The Spiritual Meaning of Tinnitus

Spiritual meaning of tinnitus: two young women talking kindly on a sofa with warm mugs, one feeling supported

If the ringing never stops for you, a list of quick meanings can feel hollow. The NIDCD says tinnitus that lasts three months or longer is called chronic, and that for some people it affects mood, sleep and concentration.

You may find strength in faith, or you may find none there, and both are fine. On Reddit’s tinnitus forum, one person wrote that they were tired of praying, and the first reply under it said, “Diseases are not a punishment from god for our sins.” We could not put it better.

So here is where we stand. Your tinnitus is not a punishment, a test you are failing, a demon or a “spiritual download” you should feel grateful for.

If a meaning helps you live with it, such as a reminder to slow down or to pray, keep it. If none does, that is completely alright too.

You also have real help. The NIDCD lists sound therapy, hearing aids if you have hearing loss, and cognitive behavioral therapy, a talking therapy that studies show can improve well-being. It also warns that vitamins, herbal extracts and supplements sold as tinnitus cures have not been proven to work, so be wary of any spiritual shop that sells you one.

When Ear Ringing Is a Body Sign First

When to see a doctor for ear ringing: a young man talking calmly with a friendly doctor in a bright clinic

Read this list once, calmly, and keep it in your back pocket. It covers the moments when your body outranks any meaning, and our guide to seeing a doctor about body signs gives you more detail.

If you are outside Britain, swap 999 for your own country’s emergency number.

  • Emergency. A blow to the head came first, or the ringing arrived together with a sudden drop in hearing, a weak face or the room spinning. The NHS says head to A&E or ring 999, and let someone else do the driving.
  • Emergency. It began after a car crash or a knock while playing sport. Mayo Clinic says that calls for emergency care.
  • As soon as possible. Dizziness came with it, or a numb or weak feeling in your face, an arm or a leg, and Mayo Clinic wants you checked quickly.
  • Right away. You wake up and one ear sounds muffled, or your hearing drops fast. The NIDCD treats sudden deafness as a medical emergency, even when it seems like earwax or allergies.
  • Urgent appointment. The sound thumps along with your heartbeat, and the NHS asks you to book an urgent GP visit.
  • See a doctor. Only one ear rings, and it keeps on ringing. Guidance from NICE says doctors should consider sending you on for a specialist hearing check.
  • See a doctor. It is there most days or nonstop, it is growing louder, or it is stealing your sleep, focus or peace of mind, says the NHS.
  • See a doctor. It turned up with a cold and is still there a week later, says Mayo Clinic.
  • Support. In the UK, the NHS points you to Tinnitus UK, a charity with a free helpline on 0800 018 0527.

Living with a sound nobody else can hear gets tiring, so say so out loud to a friend or someone at home when it does.

○ Caffeine, Alcohol and Loud Music

You may wonder which drink is linked to tinnitus. Mayo Clinic says drinking alcohol raises the risk, and it advises you to limit alcohol, caffeine and nicotine, especially in excess.

Caffeine is less clear than you might expect. Western University reported that Dr. Jordan Glicksman’s study of more than 65,000 women found more caffeine went with less new tinnitus. He stressed that caffeine is “in no way, a cure,” and a later review of four studies, on PubMed Central, called the evidence inconclusive.

The cause you can control today is volume. Mayo Clinic says that years of loud music without ear protection, or music played very loud through headphones, can lead to hearing loss and tinnitus. So turn your earbuds down, and give your ears a quiet day after a concert.

Whatever your ring means to you, the next step can be the same. Take the pause it offers, then turn the music down a notch.

Your Questions About Ringing Ears

What does ringing in both ears mean spiritually?

Most people read a sudden ring in both ears as a strong “pay attention” sign, a moment to stop and notice what you are thinking and feeling. Some also take it as someone thinking of them or a loved one close by, which is belief rather than anything proven. The NIDCD calls tinnitus common and says it can be heard in either ear, in both or inside the head, so if yours lasts for weeks, grows louder or arrives with hearing loss or dizziness, see a doctor first.

Do your ears ring when someone is thinking about you?

That is the oldest belief about ringing ears. Pliny the Elder recorded it in ancient Rome, in his Natural History, as an idea everyone shared: people far away are warned by tingling ears when others talk about them. He passed it on as something people believed rather than something he had tested, and he never said which ear.

What is the “empath ring” in your ear?

No tradition, text or teacher we checked stands behind the phrase “empath ring.” It seems to be a recent online idea that ringing ears mean you are picking up other people’s feelings. You can take a ring as a reminder to notice how you feel around others, but there is nothing older behind the name.

Is it normal to hear ringing in a quiet room?

It is very common. In a 1953 test by Heller and Bergman, reported in a 2005 review in the Brazilian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology, 94% of 80 people with normal hearing heard tinnitus while sitting in a soundproof room. Quiet simply lets you notice a sound that everyday noise usually covers.

What drink is linked to tinnitus?

Alcohol is the clearest one. Mayo Clinic says drinking alcohol raises the risk of tinnitus, and it advises limiting alcohol, caffeine and nicotine. Caffeine is less clear, because a large study reported by Western University found more caffeine went with less new tinnitus, and a later review called the evidence inconclusive.

When should I see a doctor about ear ringing?

Call for emergency help when the ringing follows a blow to the head or arrives with sudden hearing loss, a weak face or the room spinning, as the NHS advises, and treat any sudden drop in hearing as an emergency, as the NIDCD does. Book a doctor’s visit soon if the sound thumps along with your heartbeat, stays in one ear, never goes away, is growing louder or is costing you sleep or calm. Our doctor guide for body signs has the full list.
