Right Ear Ringing Spiritual Meaning: Good News or Tinnitus?

Published on:

In folk belief, the classic right ear ringing spiritual meaning is a kind one: someone, somewhere, is saying something good about you. The “someone is talking about you” part really is ancient. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder recorded it, but his Natural History never says which ear. The right-means-praise rule shows up much later, in a footnote by his English translators Bostock and Riley about what people in France and England said in their day.

Your ear has a plain side too. A short ring in one ear is usually ordinary tinnitus, and the NHS says tinnitus is not usually a sign of anything serious. If yours keeps coming back, beats with your pulse or comes with hearing loss or a spinning feeling, that is when a body sign needs a doctor.

Ears are only one of the ways people read the body, and our guide to what body signs mean spiritually covers the others. If both ears are ringing, or you want the left and right side by side, go to our ear ringing spiritual meaning page. For everyday moments of every kind, start with reading signs from the universe.

What Does It Mean When Your Right Ear Rings?

What does it mean when your right ear rings: a young man on a park bench listening, hand near his right ear

Say you are on the bus with one earbud in, and your right ear suddenly sings a thin, high note. Then it is gone. Here are the readings people most often give that moment, and you are free to keep the one that fits.

  • Someone is speaking well of you. This is the oldest and best-known reading, and the next section shows where it really comes from.
  • A nudge to pay attention. Many people take a sudden ring as “stop and notice what you were just thinking.”
  • Someone on your mind is thinking of you too. This one carries most of the love searches.
  • Your intuition speaking up. If you have ever felt you just knew something, you can read the ring as that inner sense tapping you on the shoulder.
  • An answer during prayer or meditation. A ring in a quiet, holy moment can feel like being heard.
  • Change inside you. Some people count it among the ascension symptoms they link with a spiritual awakening.

You will also meet the word clairaudience on spiritual pages. Merriam-Webster defines it as “the power or faculty of hearing something not present to the ear but regarded as having objective reality.” People who use the word are usually describing a quiet knowing, close to what we cover in instinct vs intuition.

To find your own reading, try this the next time it happens.

  1. Stop and notice the thought that was in your head a second before the ring.
  2. Ask who you were with, or who you were missing.
  3. Write the moment down in your phone, with the date.

A ring while you dreaded a test and a ring while you thought of your grandmother are very different moments. Let the meaning follow your moment, not a list.

Where the Right Ear Ringing Spiritual Meaning Comes From

Right ear ringing meaning origins: a quiet ancient Roman study with closed scrolls and an oil lamp

Most pages say “ancient cultures” or “many traditions” see the right ear as lucky, and then never name one. We went back to the old books themselves. The story they tell is smaller than the lists, and kinder.

○ Pliny and “Someone Is Talking About You”

Pliny the Elder was a Roman writer whose Natural History tried to record everything people knew and believed. Book 28, chapter 5 lists everyday habits, such as greeting someone who sneezes. Then it says, “it is a notion universally received, that absent persons have warning that others are speaking of them by the tingling of the ears.”

That is the whole of it. No left, no right, no good or bad.

The English writer Thomas Browne still heard the saying in his day. In Pseudodoxia Epidemica (1646), his book of popular mistaken beliefs, he writes, “When our cheek burneth or ear tingleth, we usually say that some body is talking of us.” He calls it “an ancient conceit” and still gives no side.

○ Right for Praise, Left for Blame

The rule nearly every page now repeats comes from a footnote. When John Bostock and H. T. Riley translated Pliny into English, they added a note to that very line in their fifth volume, printed in London in 1856. “In France and England, at the present day,” they wrote, the notion was still everywhere: “If the right ear tingles, some one is speaking well of us; if the left ear, the reverse.”

So the right-for-praise rule is real folklore. It is simply the folklore of Britain and France in the translators’ own century, not a teaching from Rome.

○ Why the Sides Do Not Agree

Go back more than two centuries before that footnote, and the sides swap. John Melton’s Astrologaster, printed in London in 1620, has a list of popular superstitions. Number 7 reads, “when the left cheeke burnes, it is a signe some bodie talkes well of you, but if the right cheeke burnes it is a signe of ill.” Those are cheeks, not ears, but the idea is the same, and the good side is the left.

Families still disagree today. In a Reddit thread from October 2026, one poster said they were taught “left for love, right for spite.” Another remembered a grandmother who said “left ear burning is someone speaking good about you, right is badmouthing, never could keep it straight which is which though.”

We think that grandmother said the most honest thing in all of ear lore. If the sides have flipped back and forth for four hundred years, a ring in your right ear cannot be a verdict on you. It is a story, and you are allowed to read it kindly.

If it was your left ear that rang, our page on left ear ringing tells that side.

○ Where the Angels and “Take Heed” Readings Come From

Many spiritual pages say a right-ear ring means your angels, guides or higher self want you to listen. The earliest written source we found for that is the Law of One, a set of channeled sessions. In session 44, dated March 28, 1981, a voice calling itself Ra calls a tone in the left ear “a negatively oriented signal.” A tone in the right ear, it says, is a positive one, “some unworded message saying, ‘Listen. Take heed.'”

The lists that sort ringing by pitch are newer still. A Reddit post from November 2022, upvoted more than 500 times, says high-pitched ringing in the right ear means “angels or advanced aliens.” Low-pitched ringing, it says, means “lower vibrational beings” who are “there to steal your energy.” Its own poster added, “Yes I looked this up on google,” and lists very like it now sit on many websites as if they were old tradition.

None of this makes those readings wrong for you. They are modern beliefs, and you can hold them as gently as you like. But please do not let the scary half of those lists frighten you, because no older source we read says a ring means something is draining you.

○ Right Ear Itching or Burning

An itchy or burning right ear gets the same kind of reading as a ringing one. The Digital Archive of Scottish Gaelic explains that in Gaelic belief, “if one’s right ear is burning then it is held that someone is praising them.” A burning left ear means you are being criticized. A Korean American family saying, kept in the USC Digital Folklore Archives, runs the same way for itching: “when your right ear itches, good things are being said.”

Melton’s burning cheeks went the other way, of course. So treat an itch or a warm ear as a little family folklore, and pick the side your own grandmother would pick.

Right Ear Ringing and Love

Ringing in right ear spiritual meaning love: a young woman on a sofa holding her phone, smiling and touching her ear

You type their name, and your right ear rings. Or it happens every time an ex comes up in conversation. Moments like these are why so many people search for a love meaning.

Many people read that ring as the other person thinking of you at the same moment, or as a sign that the bond matters. In twin flame circles it is a very common story (people trade these moments online all the time). The honest root of all of it is the oldest reading on this page: someone is talking, or thinking, about you.

A ring is a sweet moment, but it is not a reply. If you are waiting on someone who keeps you guessing, let the ring remind you to look after yourself first. The person who is right for you will not need your ear to tell you that they care.

If love signs speak to you, the white butterfly is another one people often connect with a twin flame.

Right Ear Ringing for Women

Right ear ringing female meaning: a young woman at a morning window with tea, hand near her right ear, calm

If you searched for a female meaning, here is the plain answer. We found no tradition, old or new, that gives women a different meaning for a ringing right ear. Pliny, his translators’ footnote, Melton, and the Gaelic and Korean American sayings all speak to everyone.

You may read on some sites that the right side is “masculine” energy, so a ring there means something special for a woman. We could not trace that idea to any text, so we leave it out.

So every reading on this page is yours too. What women ask about most is love, intuition and prayer, and each has its own place here: the love section, the meanings list and ringing during prayer.

Sudden Ringing in the Right Ear for a Few Seconds

Sudden ringing in right ear for a few seconds: a young man pausing on a sidewalk, hand near his right ear

This is the one most people mean. Your right ear seems to go quiet, a thin note rises, and a few seconds later it fades.

Spiritually, many people treat it as a tap on the shoulder: notice this moment. Some say a quick “thank you” and carry on, which we think is a lovely habit.

On the body side, ringing is common. The US National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) says surveys estimate that 10 to 25% of adults have tinnitus, and that children can have it too. The NIDCD adds that tinnitus is “only rarely associated with a serious medical problem.”

You may read online that “spiritual” ringing lasts seconds while “medical” ringing lasts longer. No health body we read uses that rule. What doctors look at is whether it keeps coming back, gets worse or comes with other changes, and the doctor section below lists those.

High-Pitched, Low or Buzzing Ringing in the Right Ear

High-pitched ringing in right ear: a young woman with headphones around her neck listening calmly

The popular pitch lists say a high, clear ring in the right ear means angels are close. A low ring means heavy energy, and a buzz means you are tied to someone you love. As you saw above, those lists are modern and unsourced, so hold them lightly.

Mayo Clinic says high-pitched ringing is the most common tinnitus sound, and it often comes from loud noise, hearing loss or medicines. Low-pitched ringing may point to a blocked ear canal, Meniere’s disease or stiff inner ear bones. Pulsing, rushing or humming usually has a blood vessel cause, such as high blood pressure, and clicking points to small muscle movements around the ear.

We would read the pitch by how it felt, not by a chart. If the ring felt bright and calm, take it as a bright moment. If a low hum or a beat in your ear keeps returning, let that send you to a doctor first and to a meanings list second.

Right Ear Ringing at Night or While You Pray

Quiet is when most people notice the ring, and there is a reason for it.

The NIDCD says one leading theory is that while tinnitus seems to be in your ear, the sound is made by your brain, in its hearing area (the auditory cortex). That area also talks to the parts of the brain that handle attention and emotion. In a silent room, a faint ring has nothing to hide behind.

○ At Night or When You Wake Up

A ring as you lie down, or one that greets you when you wake, is often read as a message arriving while your mind is open. Some people take it as someone they love thinking of them as the day ends.

If night ringing keeps you from falling asleep, the NHS suggests things like a steady bedtime routine and cutting down on caffeine. And if it is affecting your sleep night after night, the NHS says that is a reason to see a GP.

○ During Prayer or Meditation

A ring in the middle of a prayer can feel like an answer, and many people take it as a sign that God or their guides are close. If that is what you felt, you can keep that comfort.

It is also true that still, focused moments are exactly when ringing gets noticed. So a silent ear is no sign that your prayer went unheard, and a ringing one is not the only way an answer comes.

What Does God Say About the Right Ear?

We found no verse in the Bible that names a ringing right ear as a sign. What it does have are tingling ears, and a right ear set apart for God.

In 1 Samuel, chapter 3, verse 11, God tells the young Samuel, “I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.” The same words come back in 2 Kings, chapter 21, verse 12 and in Jeremiah, chapter 19, verse 3. Each time, the news is grave, not good.

In a column on the Wesleyan Church website, Ron McClung reads tingling ears as “news that gets our immediate attention,” and says it may be good news or bad. That is a fair way to hold it: in scripture, tingling ears mean “listen, something big is happening,” not “someone is praising you.”

The right ear itself appears in rites of setting apart.

In Exodus, chapter 29, verse 20, God tells Moses to touch the blood of the offering to the tip of the right ear of Aaron and his sons, and to their right thumb and right big toe. In Leviticus, chapter 8, verses 23 to 24, Moses does it as they become priests. Leviticus, chapter 14, verse 14 does the same for a person being made clean.

You can read this as the right ear being given to God, ready to hear Him. That is a reflection rather than church teaching, but it is a beautiful one to carry if your right ear rings while you pray.

When Right Ear Ringing Is a Reason to See a Doctor

Right ear ringing, when to see a doctor: a young man talking calmly with a friendly doctor in a bright office

Most ringing is harmless, and none of this is meant to scare you. These are the times a doctor comes first, whatever the ring means to you. Our page on when to see a doctor for a body sign gathers them with other signs.

  • Ringing in only one ear that keeps going. NICE, which writes the UK’s health guidelines, tells doctors to consider referral for persistent ringing in one ear.
  • Ringing with hearing loss on one side. Mayo Clinic says to see a healthcare professional if you notice hearing loss in one ear, ringing or trouble with balance. One rare, non-cancerous cause sits on the hearing nerve.
  • Ringing that beats in time with your pulse. The NHS says to ask for an urgent GP appointment.
  • Hearing that drops suddenly, often in one ear. The NIDCD calls sudden deafness a medical emergency and says to see a doctor immediately, because treatment delayed more than two to four weeks is less likely to help.
  • Ringing after a head injury, or with sudden hearing loss, face weakness or a spinning feeling. The NHS says to go to A&E or call 999 in the UK (anywhere else, call your local emergency number).
  • Ringing with numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg, or with dizziness. Mayo Clinic says to be seen as soon as possible.
  • Ringing that is regular, getting worse, or hurting your sleep, focus or mood. The NHS says to see a GP.

If the sound is making you feel low or scared, please tell someone you trust and see a doctor. You do not have to sit with it alone.

Once your body has its answer, the meaning is yours to keep. Praise, a nudge or simply your own quiet mind, a ringing right ear is a good moment to stop and listen to your life.

Questions About Right Ear Ringing

Is right ear ringing good or bad luck?

In most folk belief it is good. The best-known rule, written down by Pliny’s English translators Bostock and Riley in the 1850s, says a ringing right ear means someone is speaking well of you. Older and family sources sometimes swap the sides, so no rule is fixed, and we would take it as a kind nudge rather than bad luck.

What do ears represent spiritually?

Ears stand for listening: to other people, to your own intuition and, for people of faith, to God. In the Bible, tingling ears mean news so big it grabs your attention (1 Samuel, chapter 3, verse 11), and the right ear is marked when Aaron and his sons are set apart as priests in Exodus and Leviticus. Folk belief adds that ringing or burning ears mean someone is talking about you.

Does ringing in the ears mean high blood pressure?

Not usually. Mayo Clinic lists high blood pressure among the blood vessel conditions that can cause tinnitus or make it louder, and says pulsing, rushing or humming sounds usually come from that kind of cause. Most ringing has other, everyday causes, but ringing that beats in time with your pulse should be checked by a doctor soon.

Can ringing in one ear mean a stroke?

Ringing on its own is not named as a stroke sign by the health bodies we read. The UK’s NICE guideline says tinnitus that comes with a suspected stroke or sudden signs such as face weakness needs urgent help, and Mayo Clinic says to be seen as soon as possible if ringing comes with numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg. If that happens, call your local emergency number.

What drink is linked to tinnitus?

Alcohol and caffeine are the ones Mayo Clinic names, along with nicotine. It advises limiting all three because, especially in excess, they can affect blood flow and make tinnitus worse, and it says drinking alcohol raises the risk of tinnitus. The NHS also suggests cutting down on caffeine to help you sleep if ringing keeps you up.

What does it mean when your left ear rings?

In the rule most people know, a ringing left ear means someone is speaking badly of you, but older English sources and some families have it the other way round. Our left ear ringing page covers that side in full.
