What Is Reality Shifting? How It Works and Is It Real

What is reality shifting: a sleeping girl's awareness steps through a glowing doorway into her desired reality

What is reality shifting? It means moving your awareness from your current reality (CR), the life you are living now, to a desired reality (DR) you have chosen, so you can experience it as if you were really there. It is a practice and a belief, not a proven fact, and shifters believe that every reality you can imagine already exists somewhere and that a calm, focused mind can visit it.

If you have seen videos of people waking up at Hogwarts or in the world of My Hero Academia, this is what they mean. Our guide to shifting to Hogwarts shows how fans try it.

Your body stays in your bed. It is your attention, shifters say, that travels.

Below you will find the words shifters use, how they say it works, what it feels like, how to stay safe and what psychologists have found so far. When you are ready to try, our guide to reality shifting methods for beginners helps you choose your first one.

The Words Shifters Use

Current reality and desired reality: an ordinary bedroom joined by a glowing archway to a magical town

Shifting has its own vocabulary, and most of it was born on TikTok and Amino. You will meet these words on every shifting page on this site. The community even has its own reality shifting symbol, which some shifters draw, wear or add to their bios.

  • CR, your current reality, is the life you have now, with your family, your school and your friends.
  • DR, your desired reality, is where you want to go. It can be a fictional world, a band’s tour bus or a version of your own life where a few things go differently.
  • Script is the written plan for your DR: where you are, who is there, what you look like and how you come back.
  • WR, a waiting room, is an in-between place some shifters visit first. It is calm, private and designed by you.
  • Safe word is a word or phrase you script to bring you home to your CR at once.
  • Clone is the version of you that many shifters believe carries on your life here while you are away. Some script that they have no clone and that time simply pauses instead.
  • The void is a dark, featureless state that some shifters reach through deep meditation and use as a doorway to any DR.
  • Permashifting means planning to stay in a DR for good instead of coming back. Our guide to what permashifting means explains it, and why we always keep a way back.
  • Respawning means being reborn into a DR and starting that life over. Some tie it to dying, which is why we come back to it in the safety section.
  • Subliminals are audio tracks with affirmations layered under music or ambient sound. Our pick of the best subliminals for shifting explains how to use them safely.

How Does Reality Shifting Work?

How reality shifting works: a meditating girl surrounded by glowing bubble worlds of the multiverse

Shifters believe in a multiverse, an endless number of realities, each one as real as this one. On that view your DR already exists.

You are not creating it. You are tuning your awareness to it, the way you change the channel on a radio.

Strip away the names and the methods look a lot alike. Psychologists who studied shifters’ posts found that the methods rest on relaxing, focusing your attention and suggesting things to yourself.

In practice you lie or sit still and slow your breathing. Then you count, repeat affirmations, picture a scene or listen to a sound until your mind settles on your DR.

The script does the rest. If the method is how you travel, the script is where you are going.

Many shifters believe your subconscious mind already knows the way, and the script simply gives it an address.

Shifting spread fast during the pandemic lockdowns, across TikTok, Amino, Reddit, YouTube and Wattpad. Most of the people doing it were teenagers and very young adults.

That is why so much of its language sounds like the internet (and why so many DRs are fandoms). Many of those teenagers are adults now, and our guide to reality shifting as an adult covers what changes after school.

Awake Methods and Sleep Methods

Awake shifting methods by day and sleep shifting methods at night

Most shifting methods belong to one of two groups, and choosing between them is the first real decision you make.

Sleep methods happen as you drift off. You relax, run through the method and let yourself fall asleep, and shifters believe the next thing you see is your DR. In the heartbeat method of shifting, for example, you fall asleep to a heartbeat track while you imagine resting on the chest of someone from your DR.

The Raven, Pillow and Heartbeat methods all work this way, and our guide to sleep shifting methods covers ten of them, plus the best moments in the night to try. If you already have lucid dreams, our lucid dream method shifting guide shows how shifters use one as a doorway.

Awake methods happen with your eyes closed but your mind alert, sitting or lying down, at any time of day. You never cross into sleep. When you open your eyes at the end, shifters believe you have arrived.

The Julia method is a favorite, and you will find eleven more in our awake shifting methods. If you want to start with it, our Julia method shifting guide takes you through each step.

We think most beginners do best with a sleep method at their normal bedtime, because the body is already winding down.

But if you have ever had sleep paralysis, or lying in the dark makes you anxious, start awake. Sleep paralysis happens right at the edge of sleep, in the moments just before you drop off or just after you come to. An awake method done sitting up, while it is still light outside, keeps you away from that edge.

Psychologists who studied shifting think the people who shift most easily are the ones who can narrow their attention, shut out distractions and feel their DR as vivid and lifelike.

Some of that is simply how a person is made. But focus is something you can practice, so if your first tries feel flat, you are not doing it wrong. You are still training.

Not sure which method fits you? The quick picker at the top of our guide to every shifting method matches a method to how your mind works.

If you cannot picture things in your head, you are not left out. These shifting methods without visualization rely on intent, words and sound instead of mental pictures.

How to Start Reality Shifting

You do not need anything special to start. A quiet room, a notebook and some patience are enough.

  1. Read the safety guide first. Our guide to whether reality shifting is dangerous tells you which feelings mean stop.
  2. Choose one DR. Pick a place you love and know well. A world you have read or watched many times is much easier to hold in your mind than one you invented last night.
  3. Write a short script. One page is plenty for a first try. Put your safe word and your way back near the top.
  4. Pick one method and stay with it. Give it several calm evenings before you judge it. Switching methods every night teaches your mind nothing.
  5. Get your body ready. Use the bathroom, drink some water, put your phone on silent and lie in a position that will not make you ache.
  6. Try at your usual bedtime. If you fall asleep, that is completely alright. You still got a good night’s sleep.
  7. Write down what happened. A line or two the next morning shows you what is working and what is not.

Our shifting tips for beginners go further, from scripting to looking after your body.

○ An Example of a First Try

Say your DR is a small seaside town where you run a bookshop.

Your script says you wake up in the room above the shop. The floorboards are cold, gulls are calling outside, and your best friend is already downstairs sorting new books. Your safe word is “lighthouse”.

At your usual bedtime you settle into the position you normally sleep in and play a soft track of waves. You breathe slowly and count toward 100.

Every ten numbers you pause and say one line from your script: “I live above my bookshop.” “The sea is at the end of my street.” (That rhythm of counting and affirming is the heart of the Cinn’s method of reality shifting.)

Maybe you notice the smell of old paper. Maybe you only notice you are sleepy.

If you drift off, you sleep. If anything feels wrong, you say “lighthouse”, sit up and get a glass of water.

In the morning you write down how far you got, and tomorrow you try again.

Scripting Your Desired Reality

Scripting a desired reality in a notebook on a cosy bed

You can shift without a script. But most beginners find shifting much easier with one, because it gives a wandering mind somewhere definite to go.

Most scripts start with the basics: where you are, who you are, what you look like and who is around you.

We always suggest writing your safety lines before anything else. Many shifters script that they are safe from harm in their DR, that any pain there is never real, that they will not get too attached to it, and that their safe word brings them home at once.

Our reality shifting script template walks you through every page of a script, safe word included. A short script you have read many times beats a long one you never finished.

What Does Reality Shifting Feel Like?

What reality shifting feels like: tingling sparkles and a floating feeling while lying in bed

Shifters describe many small sensations as they get close: tingling, a heavy or floating body, a sudden falling jolt, flashes of light with your eyes shut, or sounds and smells from their DR.

The reality shifting symptoms guide walks through each one and the three stages people describe.

Treat these as reports from other shifters, not a checklist. Some shifters notice none of them yet still say they made it. Others notice every one and wake up in their own bed. A few describe a glimpse of their DR that ends within seconds, and our guide explains what counts as a mini shift.

One thing is never a shifting symptom, and that is real physical trouble. Trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or sudden dizziness or weakness are warning signs of a medical emergency.

Stop at once and call 911 or your local emergency number.

When your motivation dips, read some reality shifting stories from shifters on Reddit and YouTube. They are people’s own accounts, so enjoy them as stories rather than proof.

Is Reality Shifting Safe? When to Stop

Shifting safely: waking up rested and calm in the morning light

Lying in bed and picturing a place you love is not the risky part. Doing it until 2 a.m. on a school night, night after night, is.

Sleep comes first. For teenagers aged 13 to 18, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends 8 to 10 hours out of every 24.

Shifting is never worth losing that, which is why step 6 above has you practicing at your normal bedtime and letting sleep win. Methods that set an alarm for the middle of the night can wait until there is no school the next morning. When that night comes, our guide to alarm method shifting explains both versions, including one that leaves your sleep alone.

If you wake up and cannot move, that is sleep paralysis. It can be scary, especially the first time, but it does you no harm.

Plenty of shifters hope it means they are about to arrive. We would rather you let it end the session: once you can move, sit up, switch on a lamp and call it a night. If it keeps coming back, that is worth a doctor’s appointment, and a parent can help you book one.

Set shifting down for now, and talk to someone older you trust (a parent, a teacher, a school counselor) about what is going on, if any of these sound like you.

  • Your DR and your CR have started to blur together during the day.
  • Long after a session ends, the world around you still feels strange or far away.
  • Your friends have started to feel like a distraction from your DR.
  • You skip meals or homework to shift.
  • Your sleep is falling apart, or your grades suddenly drop.

The US National Institute of Mental Health lists several of these changes among the signs that can appear before psychosis, a condition in which the mind loses some of its contact with reality. Nobody has shown that shifting leads there. But if these changes grow or will not go away, see a doctor.

Respawning, from the word list near the top, is the one shifting idea we never treat lightly. If not coming back has started to sound like relief, or part of you has thought about ending your life, please let someone know now. Any of these lines will listen.

  • In the US, a call or a text to 988 reaches the 988 Lifeline, and so does the chat at 988lifeline.org. It is free and confidential, and it never closes.
  • In the UK and Ireland, dial 116 123 for Samaritans. The call is free from any phone, and there is no wrong time to ring. Childline is there for anyone in the UK under 19 on 0800 1111, a number that never shows on the bill at home.
  • In India, 14416 connects you to Tele MANAS at no cost, 24/7, in whichever language you pick.
  • If anyone is about to get hurt, your local emergency number comes first, before any of these.

Our full safety guide covers each of these in more depth, along with how to bring up shifting with your parents.

Is Reality Shifting Real?

Is reality shifting real? A mind full of stars and a castle beside an ordinary town at dusk

Nobody has shown that anyone moves to another universe. Nobody has really tested it either.

Research on shifting is still very thin. The best-known paper is a review led by Eli Somer, a psychologist at the University of Haifa.

Its authors did not test shifters in a lab. They read how shifters describe the experience online and compared it with hypnosis, daydreaming and lucid dreaming.

What they found will sound familiar. Some shifters report a strong feeling of being there, and a few are sure the world they reach is as solid as this one.

The psychologists read it differently. They saw shifting as a kind of self-hypnosis, close to other mental activities where people become deeply absorbed in a vivid fantasy.

A newer, smaller study held group talks with shifters, then surveyed 19 of them alongside 40 people who do not shift. Its authors think shifting may meet a hunger for new experiences, through a strong pull toward fantasy and one-sided bonds with fictional characters. They also flagged a downside of learning it online: heavy social media use and bad experiences there.

Shifters answer that a mind is exactly what travels, and that science simply has not caught up.

Here is where we stand. You can leave the big question open and still get a lot from shifting.

Treat your DR as something your mind makes vivid and lovely. If it turns out to be more than that, wonderful.

If it does not, you have still had a peaceful evening, a story you love and some good practice at holding your focus. What matters most is that you always come back to this life and keep looking after it.

Your First Shift Starts With One Page

Every DR, from Hogwarts to a little bookshop by the sea, begins the same way. One page of script, one quiet evening and one method you trust.

You do not have to get it right the first time. You only have to begin, and keep your feet in this life while you dream about the next one.

Happy shifting!

Reality Shifting FAQ

How do you know if you have shifted realities?

Shifters say you simply know, because you open your eyes in your DR and all five senses tell you that you are there. There is no outside test, and nothing you can carry back as proof. Many shifters script a small sign for themselves, like a certain song playing or a note on the bedside table, so they recognize their arrival at once. Waking up in your own bed means nothing has gone wrong. Most people need many tries.

How long does shifting usually take?

Nobody can give you a number. Many shifters describe weeks or months of practice before anything happens, and some never shift at all, which is completely alright. The first-night stories you see on TikTok are real to the people telling them, but they get shared because they are unusual. Give one method several calm evenings in a row before you switch, and write a line about each try so you can see your progress.

Is reality shifting just lucid dreaming?

Not quite, though the two can feel alike. A lucid dream is an ordinary dream in which you realize, while still asleep, that you are dreaming. Shifting is planned ahead: you choose your DR, often write a script and follow a method, and many methods are done fully awake. The biggest gap is belief. Shifters believe their DR is a real place, while a lucid dream, by definition, is a dream you have recognized as one.

Is reality shifting a mental illness?

No. Reality shifting is a practice, not a diagnosis, and enjoying it does not mean something is wrong with you. The psychologists behind the main review of shifting placed it closer to ordinary, healthy daydreaming. It becomes a worry when it starts to take over: when you lose sleep, pull away from friends, or start mixing up your DR and your CR. If that sounds like you, stop for a few nights and let a parent or your doctor know how it has been going. Our safety guide explains the warning signs.

Is reality shifting a form of witchcraft?

Most shifters do not see it that way. Shifting needs no spells or spirits, only focus, imagination and words you repeat to yourself, which is why many shifters compare it to meditation or daydreaming. But faiths differ, and so do families. If your own faith leaves you unsure, bring the question to your parents or to someone you trust at your place of worship. Keeping shifting a secret from them only makes it harder to get help if you ever need it.

What does shifting mean in Gen Z?

Among Gen Z online, shifting usually means reality shifting: trying to move your awareness from this life to a desired reality, often a fictional world like Hogwarts. The word spread through TikTok, where shifters share their methods, scripts and stories. So if a friend says they are shifting tonight, they mean they will try a method before bed.
