Over recent years, viral videos on TikTok have been trending in which Gen Z “reality shifters” have shared their experiences of travelling to Hogwarts and other fantastical destinations.

Most reality shifting methods involve falling asleep. You practice the techniques before bed and “wake up” in your desired reality (DR) in your dreams.

But the goal of reality shifting goes beyond dreaming. It is about sending your consciousness to another world. This may leave you wondering whether there are any reality shifting methods you can practice while you are wide awake. 

The answer is “yes.” In this post, we will share some popular awake shifting methods with you so you can send your consciousness on a magical journey anytime, anywhere.

What Does It Feel Like to Shift While Awake?

Just as sleep methods for reality shifting sometimes produce “symptoms” as you approach your DR, the same is true for awake methods.

Some sensations you might feel include floating, tingling, and a sensation of being “pulled” elsewhere. Some people also see lights or hear voices before opening their eyes in their DR.

Reality shifting while awake does not have to come with symptoms, however. You can even script your dream reality so that when you arrive in your DR, your eyes will open on their own.

8 Easy Staying Awake Shifting Methods

Now that you know what it can feel like to shift realities while awake let’s share some simple no sleep shifting methods you can use to reach your DR.

1. Julia Method Shifting

Julia Method

One of the most commonly recommended methods for reality shifting without sleep is the Julia Method.  

The Julia Method of Shifting (<– click for in depth guide) depends on two words, “I am” for the whole process. During the process, one can use binaural beats to stimulate the dream-like state.

While in a starfish-like position, start the mantra with “I am” as a prefix. Add anything next to it to describe the mantra even more meaningfully. Let these mantras be in the present tense as if what you are saying has already happened.

These mantras can be anything like, “I am vibrating at a higher frequency,” “I am in transit to my desired reality,” or “I am consciousness, pure and un-tethered.” Do this in as much sensory detail as possible, and you shall soon be in your dream reality.

2. No Sleep Shifting Method

This method is a simple variation on the Julia Method. Begin with a few minutes of meditation in a comfortable position. Then, start saying an “I am” mantra as you would with the Julia Method.

Once you start feeling symptoms, do not open your eyes right away as you would with Julia. Instead, count slowly from 0 to 100. 

Now, switch to saying reality shifting affirmations about your identity in your DR. Examples would include “I live in [location],” or “I work at [job],” or “[Person] is my BFF.”

As your awareness of your body fades, visualize your DR in as much detail as you can. Once it feels like you are there, open your eyes.

3. Estelle Method

Along with the Julia Method, the Estelle Method is the one most often recommended for reality shifting while awake. 

Estelle method shifting (<– click for in depth guide) is suitable for people who adore music and can connect with tones and vibrations easily. Imagine dancing with your DR character or someone you deeply adore.

Choose a piece of music that helps you sync with the character or person you are dancing with. The person can be your crush, love, friend, or anyone you wish. Make sure to feel every sensation in the scene. The air, smell and the touch.

 Once the dance is over, your pal says to you – “it’s time to go home, & opens the door for you. As you move through the door, you will freefall into an absolute void. You keep affirming that you are in your dream realm. As you feel the sensations, slowly open your subconscious eye.

4. Animal Shifting Method

In this fun method, you let an animal friend guide you to your desired reality. It begins with getting into a comfortable position, closing your eyes, and meditating. 

Count slowly from 0 to 100. Then, picture yourself in an outdoor environment of your choice. It could be a field, a forest, or so on. Visualize it as clearly as possible in every detail. 

Now, picture an animal running, scurrying or flying across the landscape. Any animal is fine! Choose your spirit animal or go with your first instinct, or just pick an animal you like. 

Next, chase it! Eventually, the animal will cross through a portal. You need only follow it. After you do, you will arrive in your DR, and you can open your eyes. 

5. Alice in Wonderland Method

Alice in Wonderland shifting method (<– click for in depth guide) is adopted from the famous novel by Lewis Carroll of a girl named Alice and her adventures in a magical wonderland. In this technique, one manifests their reality by playing the role of this lead character and following suit.

Lie down comfortably on your back and imagine yourself sitting beneath a tree. A person from your DR self will approach you and as you get up to talk to them, visualize them running away and jumping down a rabbit hole. You follow them and decide to jump in as and when you feel ready to.

While you’re falling down this rabbit hole, you let go of all the memories of your current reality and finally land in a small room with a door. In the same room, there will be a table with a key to this door, and the person you were chasing will ask you if you’re ready to unlock the door with it.

If you are, you can go ahead, and if you are not, you can say positive affirmations to help you move forward. Once you’ve unlocked the door and entered, you have already become your desired reality.  

In the original version of this method, you would finish up by lying down on a bed in your DR in the same position you are lying in while you do the method. 

It is still fine to complete the method this way. Just note that you are not trying to fall asleep when you lie down in your DR bed. Instead, just open your eyes and be in your DR.

6. Worm’s Shifting Method

Worm’s Shifting Method is a good one to try if you feel nervous about trying to shift and could use some validation. 

Get into a position you find comfortable for this method, and then squeeze your right hand into a fist. Then relax it. Repeat this three times, and then do it with your left hand. Do this same thing with your toes, then your arms, then your legs, then your torso, then your neck and face. By the time you are done, you should be super relaxed.

Count slowly to 100. Along the way, pause to say an affirmation now and again.

Now, imagine a person in your DR who is special to you. Hear them telling you encouraging things, like that they know you can do it, and that you will be together soon in your DR.

When you feel confident they are right there with you in the present, open your eyes. You should be with them in your DR. 

7. 54321 Shifting Method

Another technique you can use while wide awake to shift realities is the 54321 Method. To get started, get into a relaxing position and close your eyes. Breathe in through your nose, then exhale through your mouth. Do this 15 times.

The next step is to envision your DR in detail, incorporating all of your senses. 

  • Visualize 5 things you can see in your DR.
  • Imagine 4 tactile sensations.
  • Picture hearing 3 sounds in your DR.
  • Imagine 2 smells in your DR.
  • Envision 1 taste in your DR.

Once you have all your senses fully engaged, say your affirmations. When you experience symptoms, you can open your eyes in your DR.

8. Altered Elevator Method

You may be familiar with the original Elevator Method. This method involves imagining taking an elevator to your DR, at the end of which you infuse your consciousness into that of your DR self, who you find asleep in a bed.

A simpler version that does not involve beds or sleeping at all, even in the visualization, is the Alternate Elevator Method.

First, turn on an elevator ambient noise video on YouTube. Then, close your eyes in a comfortable position and imagine you are in an elevator, moving toward your DR.

Recite affirmations as you ascend (or descend—whichever you prefer). As the elevator moves closer to your DR, the doors open just a little, showing you glimpses of it. 

Finally, the elevator stops, and the doors open. You step out into your desired reality.

A: Yes. Reality shifting can work just as well while you are awake as it does while you are asleep. The reason you might think otherwise is because of limiting beliefs. But if you let go of the idea that reality shifting “should” be harder while awake, you will find that it can be every bit as effective.
